IS THERE SUCH A THING AS A ‘COFFEE NAP’?

December, 2023

In short – YES!! I always have these. Drinking coffee before a nap may seem senseless however, many people who practise this find that it boosts energy levels. Why does this happen? When you feel tired, high levels of adenosine circulates through your body. After you fall asleep, the adenosine levels begin to drop.

When caffeine is consumed, it competes with adenosine for receptors in your brain and prevents
them from reaching there, therefore making you feel less drowsy. Sleep enhances the effects of
coffee by increasing the availability of receptors for caffeine in your brain, resulting in an increase in
energy levels.

Timing your coffee intake is crucial as well as the duration of the nap. The best way to take a coffee
nap is to consume caffeine right before you sleep for approximately 15-20 minutes. This is to
prevent you from falling into a deep sleep.

Studies show that 200mg of caffeine is more effective than a higher amount – approximately 2 cups
of coffee. Excessive coffee intake can cause issues such as restlessness, anxiety and sleep can be
disrupted if consumed less than six hours before bed.

If you’re a ‘napper’ I would highly recommend that you and try this out if you have not done so
already.
