ARE WRINKLES ‘ENGRAVED’ SMILES?

October, 2021

I’m fast approaching 40 and have noticed that certain ‘lines’ have gotten more prominent and ‘engraved’ on my face! Upon doing some research, I would like to address the difference between fine lines and wrinkles – two quite different things that people very commonly get confused with.

Fine lines are caused be a weakness in the skins foundation. They start to develop when the skin becomes folded and not able to bounce back to its original shape. The main difference between fine lines and wrinkles is the depth of the crease in the skin. Fine lines are very mild, whereas wrinkles are deeper set. So, the sooner you do something about them, the better!

There are three different types of wrinkles: Dynamic, static and wrinkle folds. Dynamic wrinkles are caused by repeated contraction of muscles that are attached to the overlying skin. For example, these can be found in between the eyebrows, on the forehead and on the outer corners of your eye area – also known as ‘crows feet’.

Static wrinkles are caused by damage to the skin from the sun, smoking, genetics and due to poor nutrition. These are also caused by the natural ageing process due to the loss of collagen in the skin.

Wrinkle folds/gravitational folds occur as a result of sagging of the facial structure, due to the effects of gravity. These can be found on the neck and chin for example.

Superficial or fine lines are the easiest to smooth out and are less visible since they are restricted to the superficial skin layer.

'What can I do to overcome these?' I hear you say. Firstly, DO NOT FROWN! There is often a lot of tension on the forehead and in order to relax it, a lovely facial massage can be performed frequently. Other facial exercises can be extremely beneficial too. Using a skin care range that suits your skin type can really help make the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles look better.

The Aesthetics Clinic offers non-surgical skin tightening and rejuvenating treatments that smoothes fine lines and static wrinkles, leaving the skin looking and feeling fresh and rejuvenated. This treatment also improves blood flow and lymphatic drainage and provides a better oxygen supply and greater toxin clearance.

The treatment can target anti-aging on the forehead, around the eye area, upper lip, jowls and neck area.
